Yes, already mid-February! It can be a good time for a check-in to see how we are doing or even re-setting ourselves if need be too! So as this year is a year towards wellness, I noticed something interesting and relevant in my last reading of one of my favourite magazines: Success Magazine, February 2013 issue.

What I found to be of interest and also relevant, be it for making time for us as this could be near that time of the year where we are being healthy yet are stressing that the gains are not as big as we would like them to be, or conversely on the other side of the coin where we are still catching up from the holiday season just 8ish weeks ago! The interesting article was from Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen entitled “Take a Deep Breath”. In this article there great suggestions about lifestyle tips for managing stress. The one that I really liked whats about vitamins and minerals that can help with stress. Those that were mentioned in the article are foods that contain the specific vitamins and minerlas. Those foods are:

  • avocados, any type of berry, nuts (watch out for allergies), oranges, and salmon

With these foods listed, check out the next few posts starting next week for recipes with these foods!

Here is our Ode to wellness. Yes, this is my area for relating information about food and nutrition, yet food and nutrition and its value provides a means to our wellness. I have used the term wellness, as we are always on the continuum of improving our wellness – ok, the `new year resolution` to improving our health (the more common phraseology)!

A few key things with BigBangKitchen this year:

  • Having focus sessions on Nutrition for Healthy Skin
  • Looking at how food helps against health conditions
  • Keeping an eye out on current events … and tying it back to healthy nutrition

… and I am sure I will add one a few more as the year and warmer weather approaches!

In many places stretched across the country where I live, Canada, there is a lot of snow from coast to coast! So yes there will be a white Christmas around here!  The white colour is like that of a storybook setting, making the holidays a splendid thing.

Yet the white foods of fruits and vegetables may not be the flashiest as the coloured fruits and vegetables (greens, reds, yellow, orange, or blues and purples) they do not they lack in nutrient value. One of the most important foods in white foods is the Allium family of food: onions, garlic, shallots, and leeks. The health benefits of these foods, make these foods a leading role in many recipes. White foods contain antioxidants for healing and protection, help maintain a health cholesterol level, boost the immune system, and promote good heart health!

Some white foods include:

cauliflower, shallots, mushrooms, turnips, bananas, pears, parsnips, white corn, potatoes, ginger, garlic, white nectarines, and jicama

Next: White food recipe.

Red …Santa`s Colours!

Red fruits and vegetables have a great benefit to us, as they provide protection and healing through their antioxidants. They are also known to be of value in heart health, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and assist to improve memory function.

What are winter red fruits and vegetables? Here is a few of them:

red apples, beets, cranberries, pink or red grapefruit, blood oranges, pomegranates, red potatoes, quinces, radicchio, and radishes

Tomatoes are a very beneficial red food. However did you know it is a hybrid: botanically fruit, yet commonly considered a vegetable. The draw of the tomatoe is its richness in lycopene, which is a major antioxidant!

At first, when we think of green, we may think of freshness and vegetables. Green food products may come through leafy greens, apples, pears, and nutrition-filled produce of broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage.

There are various ways to prepare these foods such as steaming, sauteing, stir-frying. Winter green foods are those such as:

green apples, avocados, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli rabe, brussel sprouts, green cabbage, celery, endive, kale, leeks, snow peas, spinach, and watercress

These foods can be partnered with scallops, curries, chicken, and even duck for a complete meal.

Stay tuned for the reveal of Red foods later this week!

Until then,
