Yesterday, it was a balmy +6 Celcius for the 19th of November. Today a not so balmy – 11 Celcius. Today was also a reminder of how in 30 days from now it will be even closer to a marked holiday season as well.

In this Christmas holiday and past ones, what have been the primary 3 colours of Christmas?

Below in the comment section, post the 3 colours you have known to be associated with Christmas. The following week, we will start a series that takes a look at the foods that fall under each colour as well as a recipe or two using that food for that colour group.

In the meantime,

Living in a province where I see many bumper stickers that say “We love our beef” combined with the news stories of E coli concerns from a meat-packing plant to salads that may have salmonella can potentially leave one feeling unsure about the foods and left in a state of uncertainty of where to find certain foods that we need (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats as the basis we may find on our plates).

The focus on the next few pieces of information here will be about protein and where we can find protein to include in our day’s food intake. Why? Well from my professional background as well as my athletic background, I know that protein is an essential in keeping our muscles as well as our bones renewed and ready to tackle what we may be facing in our day. A variety of protein foods helps to provide the healthy fats that we need as well, which helps with our youthful heart and brain!

A Warm Autumn Day

It is September but still feels like summer (+25C outside @ 5:25 pm)! Interesting how sunshine and warm weather makes us feel good. Food has that capability too!

Two foods that crossed my path today: ginger (ok more of a herb!) and the tomatoe.

These two have the capability to make us feel good as well! Here is the science of why:

Ginger – considered a strong antioxidant that contributes to youthfulness of our heart, joints, and brain!

p.s. Helps lower blood cholesterol levels too!

Tomatoe – with respect to making us feel good, the tomatoe has become known as a primary source for vitamins and minerals in our nutrition consumption. The major benefit of the tomatoe is its anti-cancer property of lycopene – the pigment giving the tomatoe its red colour. Tomatoe based products give about 85% of all lypocene intake!

Knowing this about tomatoes, I can say the tomatoe soup I enjoyed during lunch at Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria (4th Street Sw, Calgary) gave me a double intake of feel good: delicious and preventative!

Enjoy the day!

Welcome to BigBangKitchen!

The notion of this blog was started this summer when, while on vacation and also celebrating a marked anniversary with family, I was in the kitchen mixing a salad dressing of vinegar (regular) instead of the called for balsamic vinegar and some brown sugar: “that does not go together” (or some form of that statement, says my niece (coming from an organic chemistry perspective)). I kept mixing the two together and asked her to taste the mixture. “That is good!”

From that moment onwards was the conversation of food and science. Yes, I am sure these two (food & science) have been together for some time before hand and will continue to be together for a very long time. Even more so now, with more research being done on how food interacts with the body to maintain good health, how properties of whole foods have some amazing benefits for the body to prevent illness, and how there is so much research that is assisting to produce the variety of supplements we now find on the grocery store aisles and speciality food stores!

As we get started with BigBangKitchen, feel free to leave comments, share some info and even post recipes too! BigBankKitchen is about sharing knowledge, transfering the knowledge about food and science, be it quirky or how to salvage a flaming BBQ dessert! This site will be a dynamic on-going site that will have tidbits of useful information on food and the science that goes with it, or the science and the food that goes with it … depends on your perspective!

Happy kitchening & cooking!
